About the Architect

A Message from Sam

My work is rooted in the belief that architecture should respect the past, entertain the present, and evoke a sense of what lies ahead.

Growing up in a small rural town in West Virginia, I spent my early years dreaming of designing houses and believing that good design could take you places. That belief has stayed with me. Since then, I’ve had the opportunity to work on homes across the country, from the Rocky Mountains to the Hamptons, while developing a point of view shaped in part by my time working alongside Bobby McAlpine, Ray Booth, and Ron Farris.

Today, my practice is based in Nashville, where I’ve had the privilege of designing homes throughout Belle Meade, Forest Hills, Leiper’s Fork, Franklin, and beyond. Some of our latest projects are taking us farther afield—from homes along the waters of the Bahamas to the open grasslands beneath the Tetons.

I’m especially drawn to homes with a strong connection to their surroundings. Mountain homes, lake houses, and properties shaped by the landscape have a way of becoming more than simply places to live. They become the backdrop for traditions, gatherings, and memories that are collected over time. I want the architecture to feel as though it belongs to its place while still being deeply personal to the people who call it home.

I believe that to design a thoughtful home, every detail matters. My work extends beyond the architecture of the house itself into the interior architecture including millwork, stairs, fireplaces, and the smaller details that give a home its character—as well as the master planning of larger properties with multiple structures. I approach each of these elements as part of one complete vision rather than separate pieces.

The opportunity to create these places would not be possible without the talented builders and consultants who help bring them to life and, most importantly, the clients who place their trust in me. It is a privilege to be invited into something as personal as the creation of a home.
